- Blockchain project VeChain, which specializes in supply chains, just became a member of CAFA.
- CAFA (China Animal Health and Food Safety Alliance) has 130 firms, one of which is using VeChain products.
- VeChain also plans to build upon the existing supply chain tracking technology via the blockchain.
VeChain, a major supply chain tracking blockchain project, recently revealed that it joined China’s Animal Health And Food Safety Alliance (CAFA). The company became the alliance’s council member, and is now the only blockchain provider to hold such a position.
The move was announced yesterday, September 17th, via a Medium post. According to the announcement, VeChain will be able to offer infrastructure support, as well as support regarding technical matters.

The alliance itself is quite large, and it includes over 130 firms. Some of the members also include China’s subsidiaries of famous US brands, such as Walmart, Starbucks, and even McDonald’s.
Leading the alliance to the blockchain
VeChain seems to plan to start onboarding as many members as possible, and the process has already started. Its first alliance member to go blockchain recently started using VeChain’s ToolChain. Unfortunately, it is unknown which company decided to become an early mover. Now, the blockchain firm expects more members to follow the same path.
Of course, CAFA was already using tracking technology of other kinds in the past. Right now, it uses the Food Trust Traceability Program, which is based on QR codes that allow consumers to learn information about certain products. One example is Chicken 2.0, where scanning a QR code reveals data such as the hatchery, production, environment data, the farm, test reports, certification, and more.
VeChain wants to do it on a blockchain level, and even build further upon the existing system. Further, all members of the alliance will receive the same benefits, such as being able to log key processes of food production onto the blockchain. Eventually, its blockchain will be used by hundreds of thousands of businesses tied to the alliance members.
