Research shows that Alibaba is expected to become the largest blockchain patent holder by the end of 2020.
Intellectual property consulting firm KISSPatent stated in a report released on Thursday that Alibaba is expected to replace American computer giant IBM as the largest single holder of blockchain-related patents.
According to the report, Alibaba currently occupies an “absolutely dominant position” in this field, and its number of blockchain patents issued ten times that of IBM. If Alibaba continues to develop at the current rate, by the end of 2020, it will become the largest blockchain patent holder.
KISSPatent said that the number of patents in the first half of 2020 alone exceeded that of the whole of 2019, and the number of patents in the blockchain in 2019 was three times that of 2018.
Another key point mentioned in the report is that most of the blockchain patents are applied by traditional Fortune 500 companies, not companies in the pure blockchain industry.
KISSPatent said that the reason may be the open source culture prevailing in the blockchain industry, which is contrary to the practice of patent applications.
According to a previous report by “Betwee”, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s Square company established a non-profit organization for blockchain companies last week to collect patents and maintain the open source spirit of the industry.
In the past few months, Alibaba has applied for patents for the music copyright protection blockchain and cross-chain system, which is said to be better than Cosmos.
