Since its inception, blockchain has promised to make trusted third parties redundant. In practice, though, whether blockchain is actually decentralized depends on what is governed and how this governance is enacted. As more businesses explore blockchain this distinction becomes increasingly important. There are many expected benefits from decentralization and those benefits may elude us if decentralization fails in practice.

Alex Ryvkin

Alex is a London-based FinTech entrepreneur and investor. Prior to launching his first venture, he spent 15 years building a successful career in industry and finance, advising some of the largest private financial institutions in the UK, Russia and the Middle East on their investment strategy. Since coming back to London in 2017 he has co-founded two FinTech startups: AssetBar, an innovative WealthTech platform enabling private bankers to invest in peer-to-peer loans and tokenised assets, and Mode, a crypto-backed lender and wallet. He has recently launched árda.works (https://ardaworks.com), a consultancy focusing on technology solutions in Finance and Blockchain industries. árda.works builds finance and blockchain products for its clients. Recently launched árda MVP Lab is the firm’s fixed cost and guaranteed delivery offering, enabling startups, SMEs and corporates to optimise their proof-of-concept stage risks.
