The crypto exchange today released its “Transparency Report,” which quantifies information requests received from law enforcement agencies around the world.

Coinbase今年上半年收到来自政府近2000个客户数据请求

The report shows that in the first half of 2020, the exchange received 1,914 requests from customers, and about 90% of the requests came from the three jurisdictions of the United States, the United Kingdom and Germany. Among them, US government agencies sent 1,113 requests, accounting for about 60%; British authorities accounted for 23%; Germany accounted for 9%, and most of the rest were made by European authorities.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is the most active law enforcement agency in the United States, sending a total of 340 requests, accounting for 30.5%. There were 184, 180, and 104 requests from the US Homeland Security Investigation Agency, local government agencies, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.

Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal said in a blog post: “These requests are mainly made in the form of subpoenas, but may also include search warrants and court orders.”

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (Securities And Exchange Commission), Commodity Futures Trading Commission (Secret Service), Postal Inspection Service (Postal Check Service), Department of Justice (Department Of Justice) and immigration and customs enforcement The bureau also made a request.

A month ago, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (Electronic Frontier Foundation) advised Coinbase to publish this report.

The EFF said, “There is growing concern that payment processors are required to hand over customer information, and there is no mechanism to let the public know who made these requests, or how often.”

Grewal said, “We respect the legitimate interests of government authorities in tracing abuses of others and our platform, but transparency is the key to accountability and maintaining customer trust.”
