Please note: this is a technical deep dive talk for software engineers, software architects and computer science/software engineering students only. We will therefore review all registrations and we will send you an email to confirm your seat. We require each attendee to register on Eventbrite to attend this event. Please complete the registration form provided. Security at the venue will not allow entry to anyone without a valid ticket. This is a private event and we have the right to refuse entry.
This event is brought to you by The Blockchain Connector and King’s College London Blockchain Society
We will have two technical deep dive sessions: Sharding smart contract blockchains for scalability & From Cloud to Crowd: How Streamr is tackling incremental decentralization.
FIRST PRESENTATION
Headline: Sharding smart contract blockchains for scalability
Abstract: Chainspace is a decentralized infrastructure, known as a distributed ledger, that supports user defined smart contracts and executes user-supplied transactions on their objects. The correct execution of smart contract transactions is verifiable by all. The system is scalable, by sharding state and the execution of transactions, and using S-BAC, a distributed commit protocol, to guarantee consistency. Chainspace is secure against subsets of nodes trying to compromise its integrity or availability properties through Byzantine Fault Tolerance (BFT), and extremely high-auditability, non-repudiation and `blockchain’ techniques. Even when BFT fails, auditing mechanisms are in place to trace malicious participants. We present the design, rationale, and details of Chainspace; we argue through evaluating an implementation of the system about its scaling and other features; we illustrate a number of privacy-friendly smart contracts for smart metering, polling and banking and measure their performance.
Mustafa was a member of the team that conducted the above research “Sharding smart contracts blockchains for scalability”. For a detailed summary of the research paper, please visit the following site: https://arxiv.org/abs/1708.03778
Bio of speaker: Mustafa Al-Bassam is a PhD researcher at the Information Security Research Group of the Department of Computer Science at University College London, where his research interests include the intersections of peer-to-peer systems, distributed ledgers and information security. He is also an advisor to Cognosec, an information security services company.
SECOND PRESENTATION
Headline: From Cloud to Crowd: How Streamr is tackling incremental decentralisation.
Abstract: The process of decentralisation can take a number of routes, but what if you already have a functioning product which you want to decentralise? In this 30 minute technical talk, Streamr CEO/CTO, Henri Pihkala will delve into the challenges of taking a step-by-step approach when transferring from cloud based operations to a decentralised network without losing product functionality. He will discuss the challenges and potential solutions in messaging and storage, incentivisation, identity, scalability, and computation, among others.

Bio of speaker: Henri Pihkala – Streamr CEO
Henri has been a CEO / CTO at two algorithmic trading companies, one of which he co-founded. Over the last decade he has led the development of two high-frequency algorithmic trading platforms and overseen the design of the distributed Streamr cloud analytics platform. He founded Streamr to make data more usable for all and is a strong believer in the decentralization of applications and data infrastructure.
