Central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) are coming. According to a study by the Bank for International Settlements, 20% of worldwide central banks intend to issue a CBDC within the next six years. Also the ECB is currently analyzing the introduction of a Euro CBDC. Such a digital Euro would be a huge undertaking as the EU is the largest economy in the world and the introduction of a digital Euro would have strong implications not only for households and the central bank but also for banks and industrial companies.
This online workshop introduces the basic ideas behind a Digital Euro, i.e., a Euro CBDC and explains how a Digital Euro fits in the current monetary system. Moreover, the role of the distributed ledger technology (DLT) is discussed, and the term “digital programmable Euro” is defined and explained.
