The US government has released a series of advisory notes, one of which specifically looks at the role played by cryptocurrencies in the buying and selling of illegal substances such as fentanyl.

Published on Wednesday, the advisories are focused on four facets of illegal drug trafficking: manufacturing, marketing, movement, and money.

“Within these two categories, the predominant funding mechanisms associated with fentanyl trafficking patterns include: purchases from a foreign source of supply made using money services businesses (MSBs), bank transfers, or online payment processors; purchases from a foreign source of supply made using convertiblevirtual currency (such as Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, or Monero); purchases from a USsource of supply made using an MSB, onlinepayment processor, CVC, or person-to-person sales, and other, more general money laundering mechanisms associated with TCO procurement and distribution,” it adds.

“Last year alone, federal agents seized enough fentanyl to kill every American man, woman, and child four times,” said Kellyanne Conway, a controversial senior counsellor to the president, in a statement.

It’s not surprising that cryptocurrency has played such a crucial role in the advisory note, given that US law enforcement has taken a somewhat active role in terms of cracking down on dark web marketplaces such as Silk Road and AlphaBay.
