Parachain is the last core function proposed in the Polkadot white paper, which will allow Polkadot to implement its scalable multi-chain architecture. After a period of testing, optimization and auditing, the parachain will be ready to be released on Polkadot and can be activated through on-chain governance. Once the parachain is online, the community will decide what additional features and network upgrades should be added over time.
Current stage: first demonstration of testnet
Parachain functions will first be tested and bug fixed on a parachain testnet like Rococo. Once we are sure that the code is ready, we open the registration and the parachain team can test their own chains, including interacting with other chains through XCMP-lite. Once we have developed and tested the final elements for the core functions of Parachain and Cumulus-approval voting, distribution, availability restoration, and disputes-the Polkadot code base will officially complete its functions.
There are currently 8 parachains connected to Rococo: Tick, Trick, Track, KILT, Plasm, Phala, Acala and Darwinia.
What’s next?
When we are sure that the parachain of the testnet is running smoothly and the code has been fully audited and benchmarked, we will submit a vote on enabling the parachain and the Slot auction on Kusama through on-chain governance.

Once all the audits are completed and the parachain can run smoothly on Kusama, the Polkadot community can enable the parachain function, deploy the first public parachain, and start the Slot auction on Polkadot through on-chain governance.
Polkadot first show and Slot auction
Polkadot governance will first enable the parachain function through voting for the upgrade of the operating environment. After that, it can vote to start the Slot auction and add any parachains of public benefit.

From here, the future of Polkadot will depend on the community.

Q1: How many Parachain Slots are available in total?
Based on the constraints of theoretical calculations, the current goal and expectation is that we will have about 100 Parachain Slots available on Polkadot, although potential future optimizations (such as nested relay chains) may allow us to further increase this number. However, it will take some time for the Polkadot mainnet to fully support 100 Parachain Slots, and they may slowly be added to the system over time. Not all of these Slots will be allocated through Parachain Slot auctions (after the auction starts on the basis of successful governance voting), as some of them will be used to support public parachains (aka system chains) and parallel threads for governance.
Q2: How will Parachain Slot auction be conducted?
The Parachain Slot lease will be guaranteed based on a two-week candle auction. Initially, an auction will be held approximately every two weeks. After that, the auction will continue on a rolling basis, because as the previous lease expires, more Slots will become available. Detailed information about the Slot auction will be disclosed soon.
Q3: What will happen at the end of the Parachain Slot lease?
A single Parachain Slot can only be rented for up to two years (once every 6 months). At the end of the lease, the Slot will be returned for auction, and if the team wants to keep the Slot, it needs to participate in the bidding again. Parachain Slots are replaceable, so in order to avoid disconnection and minimize the risk of losing subsequent auctions, the team can bid before the end of the current lease and secure adjacent slots. The team can also choose to connect to Polkadot in parallel threads.
Q4: What is Parachain Slot crowd lending and how can I participate?
Parachain teams may or may not choose to use Polkadot’s crowd-lending mechanism to help support their parachain Slot lease bids. In order to participate in the crowd loan, the user agrees to lock part of the DOT or KSM during the Parachain Slot lease period, and then it will be unlocked. The details of individual crowd lending activities and the joining process will be determined and communicated by the respective parachain teams.
Important note: Polkadot’s local crowd lending mechanism does not require users to send DOT or KSM from their wallet/account to participate in crowd lending. All contributions from crowd lending are processed through the logic of the crowd lending module, where one activity is identified through an index, not an address. Legitimate teams doing local crowd loans on Polkadot (via Polkadot.js) will not require you to send tokens to an address to participate. However, some teams may choose to use other mechanisms or platforms for crowd lending activities. In this case, make sure you never send a token to anyone you don’t trust. Please check the official channels of the team from time to time to learn how to participate.
Q5: What is the cost of running a parachain on Polkadot?
The cost of renting a Parachain Slot will be purely a function of market supply and demand, so it is difficult to give any meaningful estimation of bidding requirements. However, it is important to realize that the actual cost of Parachain Slot is not equal to the size of the Parachain bid. Since the parachain binding will be returned at the end of the Slot lease, the actual cost of running a parachain is best described as the opportunity cost of not betting on these DOTs during the lease period. The need to run the sequencer is an additional but relatively small cost. Generally speaking, for high-throughput applications, we expect parachains to be more economical than building smart contracts or building independent blockchains.
Q6: How and when to enable parallel threads?
We hope that the parallel thread function will be enabled several months after the parachain is online. Like any network upgrade, it needs to be enabled through on-chain governance.
Q7: When to enable cross-chain messaging?
Some interoperability features already exist in the Rococo parachain testnet using XCMP-lite, which allows parachains to exchange messages (such as assets and arbitrary logic) through the relay chain. The full XCMP will allow direct message transfer from parachain to parachain without the need to route messages through relay links, and this is still under development. Before a large number of parachains are enabled on Polkadot, the full XCMP will need to be tested, benchmarked and audited.
Q8: What are parachains with public benefits and why do we need them?
Public interest chains are parallel chains that are regarded as public interest because they will benefit the entire network. The public interest chain is determined by network governance, and network governance can vote on the relay chain to allocate an empty Slot to the chain, thereby bypassing the auction process. Public interest chains can be considered as system-level chains and public interest chains, which provide functions and benefits for the network that architects can use.
Q9: What is the duration of the Slot lease, and must parachains bid for the entire duration?
Parachain teams can bid in 6 months, from a minimum of 6 months to a maximum of 24 months. After the Slot lease expires, the Slot will be auctioned again, and if the team wants to keep the Slot (or connect as a parallel thread), they will need to bid again. Parachain Slots are replaceable, so in order to avoid disconnection and minimize the risk of losing subsequent auctions, the team can bid before the end of the current lease and secure adjacent slots.
Q10: Apart from candle auctions, are there other ways to ensure the safety of Parachain Slot?
Parachains considered to be of the common interest of the entire network can be added to a Slot through governance voting (see above).
