[Blockchain Today Correspondent Lee Ji-eun] The Australian Open (AO), a tennis tournament, has partnered with a virtual reality platform, Decentraland, to hold the tournament virtual.

According to the Crypto Potato report on the 9th (local time), the Australian Open, one of the world’s four major tournaments, is known to enter the NFT and Metaverse of the cryptocurrency industry through cooperation with Decentraland. The Australian Open kicks off on the 17th in Melbourne, Australia.

With this collaboration, tennis fans around the world can purchase NFTs connected with live match data, so more active participation is expected. As the number of Omicron cases in Australia rapidly increased, the organizers of the Australian Open are said to have made this decision for fans around the world, including Australia, who are reluctant to watch the field matches.

Therefore, this competition will also be held in Decentraland. From there, visitors can see the main stadium, Rod Laver Arena, browse the restaurants and watch a tennis match.

“With this next wave of technology, tennis fans around the world will be able to compete at the 2022 Australian Open in a way never seen before,” said Craig Tiley, Australian Open Competition Director.

The Australian Open organizers will also launch a collection of 6776 NFTs, dubbed ‘Art Ball NFTs’. This NFT collection includes all winning shots from 600 tournament matches. NFT holders will also receive an airdrop with point acquisition video, virtual wearables and other benefits. Also, if the earned NFT is 11 championship winning point shots, you will receive the actual tennis ball used in the match.

‘Art Ball NFTs’ will go on sale on the 10th, and the Australian Open’s Decentraland virtual match will be broadcast live on the 17th, when the actual match begins.
